Hi, my name is El McLaughlin and I’m a sophomore at the University of New Hampshire. I’m a digital marketing assistant and intern in the Communication and Public Affairs office on the social media team and co-manage the accounts for UNH Students.

Today, I’m going to share the process behind this year’s April Fools posts, as well as my newfound love for graphic design.

Our Fun and Lighthearted 2022 April Fools Plan and the Student Intern Who Led the Project

After realizing that March was ending and April fools’ day was approaching quickly, the UNH Social Media team wanted to pull a little playful prank on our UNH community. After copious amounts of brainstorming, we thought that saying we were getting a new mascot would be the perfect playful prank.

We had to come up with a design for our new “mascot.” After doing a small amount of research into past animals that UNH previously considered for their mascot, I decide to make a design of a moose and a unicorn.

Although I have been previously interested in more traditional style art, such as painting and drawing, by working with UNH students I was introduced to the world of graphic design.

Prior to this internship opportunity, I hadn’t had much exposure to the world of graphic design, so I started my design process using Canva. I have previously been using Canva throughout the school year to make PowerPoint presentations, so I was familiar with how the site works, and soon enough I was able to make our new mascots come to life.

After this assignment, I’ve gained a new liking for creating digital art, and with more practice, I hope to improve my skills and create even more graphic artwork in the future.

See how the prank posts are performing and vote on your favorite “new” mascot for UNH!
